AutoVFX for macOS

One file for every Mac — Apple Silicon and Intel, both native. Signed and notarised by Apple, so it opens normally. Python and the audio analysis ship inside it: nothing else to install.

· universal · Premiere Pro + After Effects panels · installer package inside a disk image

Before you install

macOS Any version that runs your Adobe apps. Apple Silicon or Intel.
Adobe Premiere Pro and/or After Effects.
Admin password Required — the package installs to /Library.
Quit Adobe first Fully quit Premiere and After Effects (⌘Q). Adobe only scans for extensions at launch, so an open app will not see the panel.
Nothing else to install. Python and the audio-analysis libraries ship inside the package. No Homebrew, no Xcode command line tools, no pip, and no network connection needed during installation. That's what the 186 MB is.

Install

  1. Quit Premiere Pro and After Effects completely (⌘Q).
  2. Open the .dmg, then open inside it.
  3. Follow the installer and enter your password when asked.
  4. Reopen Premiere or After Effects.
  5. Window ▸ Extensions ▸ AutoVFX (or AutoVFX AE).

The installer verifies the engine actually runs on your machine before it finishes, and says so either way — you know it works before you open Premiere.

First run — Premiere

  1. Open a sequence that has your song on an audio track and your cuts already made.
  2. The panel reads the sequence and shows the song, the cut count, and a placement diagram.
  3. Set how often each effect fires with the frequency dials — the diagram updates live, so you see exactly what will be placed before committing.
  4. Generate VFX.

Effects land on their own tracks, colour-coded so you can tell them apart at a glance:

EffectFires onClip colour
Shakes808 kicks, gated by energyRose
Whipscuts in energetic sectionsCerulean
Hitsbig downbeatsMango
FlashescutsCaribbean

Re-running clears those tracks first, so tweak the dials and Generate again as often as you like.

First run — After Effects

The look library is not bundled — those presets are licensed separately. On first launch the panel asks you to point it at your own: click Locate .ffx library and choose the folder that contains your 1080 and 4K preset folders. It remembers the location.

Select a layer, pick a look, and it applies natively.

Troubleshooting

The panel isn't in the Extensions menu

The app was open during install. Fully quit it — ⌘Q, not just closing the window — and reopen.

Analysis fails

The panel runs a self-check and reports the specific cause in its log rather than a stack trace. To run it yourself:

"/Library/Application Support/AutoVFX/python/bin/python3" \
  "/Library/Application Support/AutoVFX/tools/selftest.py"

It says the engine is somewhere unexpected

The line under the panel header shows which engine is in use. If it points at a folder in your home directory rather than /Library/Application Support/AutoVFX, an older hand-installed copy is taking precedence — rename it and reopen the panel.

The AE panel's library is empty

Expected — no presets ship with it. Click Locate .ffx library and point it at your own.

Nothing appears on the timeline after Generate

Check the panel log. Effects go to tracks named AutoVFX Shakes, AutoVFX Whips, AutoVFX Hits and AutoVFX Flash, which are created above your existing video tracks — scroll up in the timeline.

Uninstall

sudo sh "/Library/Application Support/AutoVFX/uninstall.sh"

Removes both panels, the installed engine, the bundled runtime and the receipt.
